Neuroimaging in the evaluation of pattern and timing of fetal and neonatal brain abnormalities
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction In this updated review, current and advanced neuroimaging technologies are discussed, along with the basic principles of imaging diagnosis and guidelines for utilization in fetal, perinatal, and neonatal brain abnormalities [1,2]. This includes pattern of injury and timing issues, with special emphasis on neurovascular disease and the differential diagnosis. In the causative differentiation of static encephalopathies (e.g., cerebral palsy, CP) from progressive encephalopathies, specific categories and timing are addressed. These include developmental abnormalities, trauma, neurovascular disease, infections and inflammatory processes, and metabolic disorders. Although a rare but important cause of progressive perinatal encephalopathy, neoplastic processes are not considered in detail here. Molecular and genetic technologies continue to advance toward eventual clinical application.

Excessive testing in emergent evaluation of children with first unprovoked seizure
Abstract Backround: The first episode of an afebrile seizure is a common cause of admission of children to emergency departments. Alot of tests are routinely performed for these patients. The cost of such an evaluation is high and benefits are doubtful. We conducted this study in order to evaluate the results of the tests and find out what tests are necessary for children with first unp...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Modified Biophysical Profile, Standard Biophysical Profile, and Neonatal Outcomes of High-risk Pregnancies
Introduction: High-risk pregnancies can result in many complications for the fetus. In these pregnancies, different tests such as non-stress test (NST), biophysical profile (BPP), oxytocin contraction stress test (OCT), and Doppler sonography can be used to evaluate fetal health. As standard BBP requires more time and expertise, in this study, we evaluated the relationship between standard BPP,...
متن کاملNeuroimaging in Iran: A Review
ABSTRACTNeuroimaging allows noninvasive evaluation of the anatomy, physiology, and function of the brain. It is widely used for diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment evaluation of neurological disorders as well as understanding functions of the brain in health and disease. Neuroimaging modalities include X-ray computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single photon emis...
متن کاملDoes perinatal asphyxia impair cognitive function without cerebral palsy?
Some studies on neurodevelopmental outcomes after neonatal encephalopathy have suggested that cognitive deficits do not occur in the absence of cerebral palsy. It is increasingly apparent that childhood survivors of overt neonatal encephalopathy may have cognitive impairments, even in the absence of functional motor deficits. The risk of cognitive deficits is related to the severity of neonatal...
متن کاملNeuroimaging in the evaluation of neonatal encephalopathy.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Computed tomography (CT) is still used for neuroimaging of infants with known or suspected neurologic disorders. Alternative neuroimaging options that do not expose the immature brain to radiation include MRI and cranial ultrasound. We aim to characterize and compare the use and findings of neuroimaging modalities, especially CT, in infants with neonatal encephalopathy....
